Derek Acorah’s wife, Gwen, confirmed the news.

Star of the popular TV programme Most Haunted, Derek Acorah has died following a brief illness.

Aged 69, he passed away in intensive care last night.

Announcing the news on Derek’s official Facebook page, Gwen wrote:

“Farewell my love! I will miss you forever! I’m devastated to announce that my beloved husband Derek has passed away after a very brief illness. Thank you so much to everybody who has supported me – I can never thank you enough.”

Derek’s last post on Facebook saw him wish fans a happy New Year, alluding to the “nasty flu bug” himself and his wife had been suffering from.

“Good morning everybody and I hope you’ve all had a spectacular celebration bringing in the new year and the new decade. I spent the time quietly at home with Gwen as we’ve both had the awful flu bug which has brought us down so low.”

Born in Bootle, Merseyside, he shot to fame on Most Haunted. Starring alongside host Yvette Fielding, the six-year series saw a team of paranormal experts investigate haunted locations, using psychic mediums and scientific equipment to communicate with the spirits.

Later appearing on Celebrity Big Brother, Derek also guest-starred on Michael Jackson: The Search for His Spirit.
