There Will Be A Naked Bike Ride In Cork Tomorrow

Brian Dillon

The people of Cork are about to see something quite different in the city tomorrow.

On Saturday, June 8 the World Naked Bike Ride will arrive in Cork, where riders are encouraged to cycle across the city naked, or covered in body paint.

The dress code is “bare as you dare”, which means full or partial nudity is encouraged, but it’s not mandatory.

The World Naked Bike Ride started in 2001, when six cyclists died in separate road accidents in Zaragoza, Spain.

Protesting the deaths of the cyclists, friends cycled naked for an afternoon to reiterate how vulnerable a cyclist is in a collision, and as a means of guaranteeing that motorists would notice them on this day at least.

The event is also used to highlight broader issues such as pollution, resource wars and global warming.

The bike ride grew to become a global phenomenon and has gone on to take place in more than 100 cities.

So, if you’re feeling up to it, you can send an email to [email protected].

Sure why not. You only live once.
