Cork restaurant shares video of empty venue – saying they ‘might as well be closed’

World-renowned for its fine seafood offerings, Fishy Fish restaurant is a Michelin Guide restaurant to be found down in Kinsale in Co Cork. Usually run off their feet with customers trying to book in for a meal, they – like countless other restaurants and pubs – have been hit hard in recent months.

Struggling to fill tables given the circumstances, owner Martin Shanahan posted a video online yesterday showing an empty restaurant. Taken at 2:30pm in the afternoon, that would have been prime time for the restaurant in its pre-Covid days.

Clearly disheartened by the situation, Shanahan wrote that they “might as well be closed”, highlighting the mental strain that the past few months have had on morale.

Several other business owners have noted similar scenes in restaurants across the country with one popular Donegal spot sharing an almost identical video just last week. Joining Dublin on risk level three of the Government’s Living with Covid scheme, the same ban on indoor dining applies to bars/cafes/restaurants there – with public health officials warning that several more counties may soon follow suit.
