Non-Drinkers Guide To Cork: Ideas For A Sober Night Out Over The Summer

Brian Dillon

Cork is mighty craic. There is absolutely no doubt about it. And although it’s some spot with great pubs, there is still a fair bit to do if you’re not in the mood for a night on the pints.

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a few drinks, but sometimes it just doesn’t tickle your fancy, and you’d like an alternative that doesn’t involve alcohol. Well, luckily there’s loads to do in Cork that doesn’t have to involve having a drink.

1. Head To A Drive-In Movie

Retro Drive-In Movies has been putting on showings of some of our all-time favourite movies all over the country, and they’re heading to Cork for the first time!

According to their website, they have some “exciting news coming very soon.”

2. Hang Out At The Arcade

Ain’t nothing like releasing your inner-child at the arcade. An evening spent playing pool, whipping your friends’ butts at bowling, or having a whack at the arcade games is always a great alternative to a night out in a pub.

The Mardyke Entertainment Complex on Sheares Street is a good shout for a night out at the arcade.

3. Spend The Night At City Limits Comedy Club

I always find that I’m laughing enough at a comedy show that I don’t need a drink at all to enjoy myself. But you usually have the option to get a drink if that’s what your pals want to do, so it’s a win-win.

The City limits Comedy Club is located in the centre of Cork City on Coburg Street opposite The Corner House/Sin É pub, and has international and Irish comedians regularly providing the laughs.

4. Go On A Tasting Trail Of The City

A food crawl is like a pub crawl, but instead of heading around to different pubs for drinks, you visit different restaurants and eateries and sample different cuisines in the one night.

Fab Food Trails organise a “relaxed but highly-focused 2.5/3 hour food stroll with an engaging and experienced guide.”

5. Take A Ghost Tour Of Cork

If you want to get the bejaysus scared out of you, then this might be the evening activity for you.

This one-hour walking tour mixes local ghost stories, tales from Cork’s rich history and, of course, plenty of frights. To find out more and to book a tour, click here.

6. Do An Escape Room

This is absolutely gas craic. You and your pals will probably kill each other as you work together to solve puzzles and find clues, but you’ll also have one of the best laughs you’ve ever had.

We Escape on Mary Street is open until 9pm every night, while No Escape on Douglas Street is open until 8.30pm Tuesday to Thursday, 9.15pm on Friday and Saturday and 8.30pm on Sunday.
