Not content with being one of the finest Gaelic footballers of his generation as well as a successful basketball player, it seems Kieran Donaghy is a dab hand at the auld poetry as well.
The Kerry star announced his retirement today in a way that not many sportspeople before him have chosen to do so. The four-time All-Ireland winner took to social media to confirm he will no longer be lining out in the green and gold and did so with an accompanying poem he penned for all his supporters.
Among other highlights, the piece states ‘I’ll never forget ye, ye know who ye are, bonded forever, on the pitch, at the bar. We climbed all the mountains, they look good from the top, Celtic crosses in our pockets, those memories won’t stop.’
The poem totals eight stanzas and is sure to bring a lump to the throat of anyone who has followed Donaghy’s career.
Who knows, it could make the Leaving Cert English paper yet. Check Donaghy’s poem out in full below.
