7 Superb Sport Documentaries To Watch On Netflix Tonight

James Fenton

You don’t have to be a big sports fan to enjoy this list.

While sport is a major theme in each film, they are all about way more than that as politics, corruption and incredible human spirit all form part of some of these incredible real life tales.

Turn on the kettle, put your feet up and take your pick.

1. Team Foxcatcher

The documentary that spawned the 2014 Oscar-nominated movie Foxcatcher, it tells the story of the murder of an American wrestler in 1996.

2. Les Bleus – Une Autre Histoire De France

Anyone who has followed the many trials and tribulations of the French football team since 1996 will be enthralled by this one.

The documentary charts how the ups and downs of the the multicultural national team has mirrored French society over the past two decades.

Aside from football, issues such as racism, terrorism and even sex tapes are dealt with in storylines that wouldn’t look out of place on Sky One’s Dream Team.

Whether you’re into sport, politics or both this gripping tale is a must-see while Irish fans will be able to recount painful memories of the 2009 Thierry Henry handball.

English subtitles are provided for anyone who’s rusty in French.

3. Iverson

The tale of NBA icon Allen Iverson and his rise from childhood poverty to basketball superstardom.

4. Man Vs Snake

Okay, technically it’s not about sport but we’ve no problem with throwing a gaming doc in this list, especially one as good as this.

If you were hooked on playing Snake on the old Nokia phones you’ll relate to this one and if you’re a fan of the 2007 flick King of Kong, expect to see some familiar faces.

5. Pumping Iron

The 1977 docudrama which shot Arnold Schwarzenegger to fame.

Age 28 at the time, bodybuilder Arnie competes for a sixth Mr. Olympia title.

6. Planet FIFA

A look into the murky and often corrupt world of football’s governing body.

7. The Battered Bastards Of Baseball
