Avatar 2 – Cast, release date and more as Kate Winslet poses with co-stars on set

James Fenton

The world of Avatar 2 will be set about 150 years from present day and it almost feels like that long since James Cameron’s original broke box office records when it was released in cinemas.

Avatar 2 is scheduled to be released a whopping 12 years after Avatar overtook Titanic, another famous Cameron work, as the highest-grossing movie in history. While the original has since been knocked off its perch by Avengers: Endgame, anticipation for the sequel remains high.

Yesterday, a picture taken on set was shared on social media and it shows Kate Winslet, Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington and Cliff Curtis having what seems to be a bloody great time filming some underwater motion-capture scenes…

Looks like some craic but when will Avatar 2 be released and what’s it all about? Everything you need to know can be found below…

When will Avatar 2 be released?

The much-anticipated sequel to the 2009 epic is scheduled for release in the United States on December 17, 2021.

Who’s in it?

Director James Cameron and his Titanic pal Kate Winslet will be reunited, with the latter joining some returning cast members from the original movie including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang. Winslet will play a member of the Metkayina free-diving clan, led by Tonowari, who will be played by Winslet’s fellow Avatar newbie Cliff Curtis.

What will it be about?

According to Digital Spy, the movie will be ‘set several years after the events of Avatar. Sully (Worthington) is now chieftain and Neytiri (Saldana) high priestess of their clan – although events will apparently focus on their children.’

Will this be the last sequel?

Heavens, no. Cameron has signed up to produce four sequels, with Avatar 2 scheduled for release in 2021 and Avatar 3 to follow two years later. As for the fourth and fifth instalments, the series is set to wrap up in 2027, so you’re probably looking at 2025 for number three. Sounds aptly-futuristic, right?

Is there a trailer?

Yes, indeed. Check it out below…
