Dermot Kennedy has taken to Twitter to do something that Irish celebs are fast becoming accustomed to doing – reminding fans about where they’re from.
In a week where Bradley Wiggins shamelessly tried to claim Irish cyclist Sam Bennett as British, Dermot Kennedy has also had to put up with his nationality being taken away from him – albeit in an undoubtedly more innocent manner than Wiggins’ clumsy attempts alongside legendary Irish cyclist Sean Kelly yesterday.
After US singer Richard Marx asked followers for voices they’d ‘describe as truly unique’, one person rightly offered the name of Rathcoole’s Dermot Kennedy alongside Sam Fender and Rhodes, although there was one problem. The Twitter user proceeded the names with the words ‘in the UK we have…’ and Dermot was quick to correct them.
Channelling a famous tweet by his singing buddy and Normal People star Paul Mescal in July, Kennedy wrote ‘Thank you for the kind words but as Paul Mescal once said, I’m Irish.’

After his man of the match exploits at Soccer Aid over the weekend alongside, Dermot’s star is continuing to rise among those who might not be familiar with his music. Surely it won’t be long before himself and Mescal can stop reminding people that they’re from this side of the Irish Sea, although a similar faux pas is never too far away, it has to be said.
