Fear City, the latest true crime offering from Netflix, looks like it’s going to be one of the major TV talking points of the coming weeks.
To give it its full title, Fear City: New York vs The Mafia takes events away from the small-town America setting that is so often favoured by the streaming service when it comes to the genre. Instead, the story plays out in the bustling metropolis of New York City throughout the late 70s and early 80s.
The three-part mini-series explores the investigation and prosecution case against the heads of the so-called Five Families of the New York mafia — Bonanno, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese and Lucchese. All five had a strong grip on the Big Apple during the era and Fear City allows viewers access to interviews with a range of main players including law enforcement personnel and ex-mafia associates.
We will also be shown news footage as well as previously unheard surveillance recordings and you can get a taster for yourself in the Fear City trailer below…
Coming from the same producers as Don’t F*ck With Cats, Fear City is, according to Netflix, the ‘era-defining conclusion of the historic Mafia Commission Trial that changed everything.’
The name Fear City comes from the nickname police gave to New York during the period and all three episodes will be released on Wednesday, July 22.
