Friday night and the lights are low, looking out for the place to go.
Pipe down, ABBA, ‘cos we ain’t going nowhere. Not with the unreal selection of movies our national broadcaster is pumping out tonight.
RTÉ have gone for that unbeatable mix of American comedy/drama and British rom/zom/com this Friday night as two of the most acclaimed movies of the 2000s hit our living rooms.
First up, on RTÉ 2 is the first film of the Edgar Wright’s so-called Cornetto Trilogy as Shaun Of The Dead gets underway at 9.35pm. The quintessential movie of its genre (romantic zombie comedy), the success of SOTD spawned the production of similar light-hearted zombie movies but none of them ever reached the heights of this classic.
Starring best pals Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the movie contains the perfect blend of quotable one-liners, gory comedy violence and scenes that will tug at the heartstrings.
Speaking of tugging at the heartstrings, Oscar-winning Little Miss Sunshine airs on RTÉ 1 at 11.55pm.
Join the Hoover family as they pack up the Volkswagen and head for California so daughter Olive can compete in the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. Along the way there are fights, tears and plenty of fell-good moments as a hugely talented cast combine to deliver some of the best performances of the decade.
Alan Arkin took home the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role while first-time writer Michael Arndt won Best Original Screenplay.
