Here are the 11 best movies on TV today

Unsure what day it is? Us too. Welcome to that weird in-between part of Christmas where the only thing to do is watch TV and continue eating leftovers… may as well lean into it.

Here’s what movies are on TV today should you already have exhausted Netflix/Amazon Prime/Disney+ and what have you.

Matilda – Channel 5 – 12:55pm

Based on Roald Dahl’s hit novel of the same name, it tells the story of Matilda a gifted young girl who discovers she has magical powers. Fantasy comedy with Mara Wilson, Pam Ferris, Embeth Davidtz, Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito.

Jurassic Park – ITV2 -2:40pm

A Steven Spielberg classic, Jurassic Park follows a group of scientists on a trip to a soon-to-open wildlife park inhabited by genetically engineered dinosaurs. Naturally, things don’t go to plan and the visitors find themselves trying to escape the deadly creatures who have broken free as a result of a power outage.

Alice Through The Looking Glass – RTÉ One – 3:50pm

Based on the characters created by Lewis Carroll, Alice comes across a magical looking glass that transports her to Wonderland, where she travels back in time to help her friend the Mad Hatter. Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway star.

The Adventures of Tintin – TG4 – 5pm

Inspired by three volumes of the famous comic book series, the movie follows Tintin, his dog Snowy and their accomplice Captain Haddock as they set out on a treasure hunt for a sunk ship commanded by Haddock’s ancestor.

Madagascar – FilmFour – 5:05pm

Led astray by a group of troublesome penguins, a group of wild animals escape from New York Zoo and suddenly find themselves shipped back off to Africa. Stranded in the jungles of Madagascar, they must learn to adapt to their surroundings and survive.

Apollo 13 – More 4 – 7pm

Fact-based drama starring Tom Hanks. The film follows astronauts  Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise aboard Apollo 13 for America’s fifth crewed mission to the Moon, but NASA must devise a plan to return the spacecraft to Earth after an on-board explosion depletes the oxygen supply and electrical power.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – Channel 5 – 8pm

Seven English pensioners find themselves over in India in search of a fresh start. Drawn in by an advert for a hotel in Jaipur, they arrive to find it far less luxurious than previously anticipated but are each charmed by the place in different ways.

Bridesmaids – ITV2 – 9pm

Asked to be the maid of honour at her best friend’s wedding, Annie (Kristen Wiig) finds herself in competition with one of the other bridesmaids – each vying for the top spot. Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy and Chris O’Dowd also feature.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – MTV – 9pm

The third instalment in the Twilight Saga film series, the plot once again centres on Bella Swan who must choose between her friendship with werewolf Jacob Black and her love for vampire Edward Cullen.

Trainspotting – Channel 4 – 11pm

Directed by Danny Boyle, Trainspotting is a black comedy-drama based on Irvine Welsh’ novel of the same name. It follows Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor), a 26-year-old unemployed heroin addict over in Edinburgh.

Mandy – FilmFour -11:25pm 

Considered to be the pick of the bunch by one of Lovin’s own, Mandy is more of an adults-only type flick. An off-the-wall horror, it stars Nicolas Cage as a man getting revenge on a group of demonic bikers who have kidnapped his wife.
