Home And Away’s Most Iconic Star Announces Departure After 30 Years

James Fenton

When it comes to the stars of Home And Away, there’s one man who’s seen it all. Ray Meagher joined the cast of the Aussie soap upon its release in 1988 playing the character of Alf Stewart but it now appears viewers will be saying goodbye to the quick-tempered mainstay.

Meagher has told Australia’s New Idea magazine that Alf will be packing his bags and leaving Summer Bay in the near future. The 74-year-old, who has won multiple awards for his portrayal of Alf, told the publication that “it’s a privilege to have a job for 30 years and really enjoy it for that time.” He will now return to the stage to reprise his role as Bob in the touring production of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert.

Fans of the show will no longer be able to enjoy Alf’s nonsensical (at least in this part of the world) mutterings or his kind nature which countless characters have felt the benefit of over the years.

Of course he wasn’t without his run-ins with a “flamin’ galah” or two either. Once more for old time’s sake?
