RTÉ continued their recent trend of airing captivating documentaries on some of Ireland’s best-loved people last night with their hour-long programme ‘This Is Christy’.
Following on from last week’s well-received John Giles documentary, this intimate look at the Aslan frontman and his bandmates appeared to draw in a lot of viewers and the reaction was generally positive.
We saw where Christy grew up with seven siblings in Finglas, the origins of the band which would go on to become one of Ireland’s most-loved live acts and how they came within touching distance of cracking America in the late 80s.
We also followed Christy as he continues his treatment for cancer, heard about his struggles with drugs which at one point saw him shown the door by both his bandmates and his wife Kathryn, and listened as he told of the harrowing sexual abuse he suffered as a child.
People were quick to praise the makers of the programme as well as the band themselves and we reckon there’ll be a surge in a number of people listening to Aslan today as a result.
Bono what’s it like to be Ireland’s greatest ever vocalist?

A subordinate snap of the children riding the pony in Dublin’s setting sun struck a chord. Purest of Irish social history. #ThisIsChristy

#ThisisChristy. Great documentary. Was never a huge fan but do feel they could have gone a longer way than they did. Kids, don’t do drugs!
