John Connors Reveals His Staggering Truth About Being A Traveller In Irish Film Industry

Darragh Berry

It came as no surprise to anyone at Thursday night’s IFTA Awards that Best actor went to John Connors for his fantastic display in Cardboard Gangsters.

Mark O’Connor’s movie has become so popular in Ireland since its release during the summer and turned out to be one of the biggest Irish movies of the year.

When the news was announced, Connors got a rip-roaring ovation from the crowd, most of which were standing and he put his acceptance speech to full use.

He started with a cheeky opener by thanking the Film Board who hadn’t any part to play in the film whatsoever.

“Oh no, wait. The Film Board didn’t fund us. They turned us down. They couldn’t understand our approach,” said Connors quickly after his joking comment.

He then went on to state just how hard it is for him in the Irish film industry but that no matter how difficult it gets, he’ll power through.

“Despite the fact that I can’t get an agent to represent me and no film-makers or casting directors will look past the fact that I’m a Traveller, this is still a huge moment for me,” he said.

Not a bad achievement for someone with no agent.

Well done, John.
