Poetry Day takes place today and Michael D Higgins has shared a collaborative poem he helped to write with the young people of Ireland in honour of the occasion.
President Michael D Higgins invited the children of Ireland to join him in creating a piece of poetry for Poetry Day earlier this month. Young people all across the country were asked to submit a line of poetry that would then be combined with other lines to form one collaborative poem.
Miggeldy kicked things off himself, writing the first and last lines of the poem which sandwiched words contributed by over 300 other participants. Students from 5th and 6th class primary school around the country submitted their work which Seamus Cashman edited into one piece.
Entitled ‘There will be time without measure’, the poem begins:
“There will be time without measure
When the air holds no fear
When we can do things without thinking and walk with arms linking
to spend time together.”
Today is #PoetryDayIreland.
To mark the Day, President Higgins wrote the first and last sentences of a new, collaborative, poem, published today.
Lines were contributed by students in 5th and 6th classes across Ireland, and edited by Seamus Cashman: https://t.co/MXVcZSpmxU pic.twitter.com/1s6Tk6EkxD

Commenting on the project, Seamus said:
“These young writers’ imaginative, perceptive and intelligent poetic lines and rhymes offer Ireland real hope for and trust in its future potential. I congratulate their willingness to respond to our President’s challenging opening line, and am proud to have assisted in completing this work for them.”
Featuring 46 stanzas in total, you can have a read through the full poem here.
