7 Classic Musicals To Watch If You Loved La La Land

Liz

La La Land burst into our lives and reminded us of the magic of musicals.

There’s nothing more satisfying than a well-executed dance sequence, a perfectly sung harmony or the big chorus numbers to get you pumped up.

La La Land was inspired by old-school musicals from the golden age of Hollywood, like these classics.

1. Singin’ In The Rain

Sublime. Gene Kelly is beautiful and I can’t think of many single scenes that are more impressive than Cosmo’s choreography to ‘Make ‘Em Laugh’.

2. High Society

A musical remake of ‘The Philadelphia Story’ starring Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly.

The film also features Louis Armstrong.

3. Easter Parade

Judy Garland is trying to make it as a dancer and is spotted by Fred Astaire after his former dance partner and wife abandons him.

Featuring so many impressive dance numbers you lose count.

4. Holiday Inn

The film where Bing Crosby originally sang White Christmas. Crosby stars as a former singer who decides to give up his old life to run an inn that only opens on holidays, where the owners put on shows for the guests.

Old friend Fred Astaire comes and threatens to take away his new partner.

5. Hello Dolly

A technicolour dream of a movie where Barbara Streisand plays a matchmaker. The music will sound familiar if you’ve watched Wall-E.

Louis Armstrong also appears in this movie.

6. Westside Story

The Broadway staple that features classics like ‘Tonight’, ‘I Feel Pretty’ and ‘America’.

8. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Marilyn Monroe is a gold-digger in danger of having her engagement ruined by a PI whose determined to out her.

Set on a cruise ship and featuring the hit ‘Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend.
