A Facebook post from a voluntary group called Ballyleague Renewal has caused outrage after it tried to sell a famous Irish singer’s memorial cards as a “unique spot prize” in their raffle.

The “real collector’s item” was used to entice more people to enter the raffle because “only 500 were printed and they’re all gone. This piece of memorabilia will be a prize in the raffle.”

Big Tom McBride who was titled ‘King of Irish Country’ on the music scene died in April and this raffle was due to take place not long after his death.

The post was eventually taken down a number of hours later after an online furore.

A spokesperson for the group has Shannonside FM that the post was an “error of judgement” and that “no malice” was intended.

Funeral Director Peter McCaughey told the Joe Finnegan show that it was very disappointing to see the cards being used for fundraising. A spokesperson for Ballyleague Renewal stated that there was an “error of judgement” and “no malice” was intended.
