Shane MacGowan Has Revealed His Favourite Famous Cover Version Of FTONY And We Have To Disagree

Darragh Berry

Only yesterday, we told you about Saoirse Ronan’s cover of The Pogues Classic, Fairytale of New York where she supped Guinness and talked about Galway Bay on American TV, could you get anything more Irish?

Some might say, it’s better to leave this masterpiece alone but there’s been quite a few famous covers.

Christy Moore, Ronan Keating, Ed Sheeran and Gavin James have all tried to recreate this masterpiece but none of the above tickle Shane MacGowan’s fancy.

MacGowan’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke tweeted that Saoirse Ronan’s version with JImmy Fallon was a big hit in their house stating that: “Shane MacGowan says this is his favourite cover version so far.”

Really? Fair enough you can exclude Keating’s version from the mix for being absolutely brutal.

Ed Sheeran’s version comes in a close second as absolutely rotten too.

But Gavin James’ version is a tearjerker and as close as you’ll get to the real thing without the piano.

But for me personally, if it’s not The Pogues, it’s got to be Christy Moore’s version, absolute perfection.
