WATCH: The London Rose’s Granny Stole The Show At The Rose Of Tralee Last Night

James Fenton

Waterford Rose Kirsten Mate Maher may have been crowned the 2018 Rose Of Tralee last night but one woman stole the show ahead of all the contestants.

London Rose Gráinne Hawkes, originally from Castleknock in Dublin, was telling host Daithí O’Sé all about her 98-year-old grandmother Nora, who was present in the audience.

Speaking of her fellow Roses, Gráinne said “I’ve been lucky enough that I’ve met 56 exceptional people but if there was room for a 58th Rose, it would be my 98-year-old grandmother, Nora Hawkes. She is exceptional.”

She probably didn’t expect Daithí and the festival organisers to take her comment quite so literally but before we knew it, James Patrice was placing a sash on a beaming Nora’s shoulder as she soaked up the adulation while being crowned an honorary rose.

Take a look at the clip below…

“Crowned of what?!”

What a great sport. Congratulations Nora and well done to all involved.
