One Of The Funniest Movies Of The 21st Century Is On RTÉ Tonight

James Fenton

If you feel like having your funny bone tickled this Friday night you could do worse than tune in to tonight’s movie on RTÉ 2.

Tropic Thunder is one of the last movies of the true ‘Frat Pack’ era of the 2000s when it seemed like Ben Stiller and/or some of his comedy cohorts were in every film to hit the big screen.

Stiller leads an all-star cast in this satirical action-comedy which was met with favourable reviews upon its release in 2008. The Zoolander star is joined by Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black, Jay Baruchel, and Brandon T. Jackson as the quintet play a group of pampered Hollywood actors chosen to star in a fictional movie about the Vietnam War.

Fed up with the prima-donna antics of his troupe, director Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan) lands them into right into the middle of a Vietnamese drug war where the ensuing feud is far from fictional.

The action unfolds at a fast pace, punctuated by memorable one-liners in pretty much every scene. Downey Jr. is a riot and look out for a cameo from a fairly unrecognisable Tom Cruise.

Tropic Thunder gets underway on RTÉ 2 tonight at 10pm.
