Paul Mescal was on Portrait Artist of the Year last night and he was wearing his famous chain

Clearly big fans of his, one contestant joked: “Oh my God, my friends are going to be so jealous”. Saying what we all were thinking to be fair.

Paul Mescal made a surprise appearance on last night’s episode of Portrait Artist of the Year, stepping in as one of the models for this week’s challenge. One of many famous faces to feature on the show, Paul joined the likes of James Nesbitt, Fay Ripley, Eddie Marsan and Fleabag’s Sian Clifford – all of whom have appeared throughout the series so far.

Commenting on how Normal People has changed his life, Paul said that it still feels as though he’s in “the middle of the storm” at the minute. Also admitting that he can be a bit fidgety, especially when nervous, the Kildare man settled in at the top of the room for his portrait.

Giving contestants his best blue steel impression, the artists got to work as they each tried to capture his Irish charm on canvas.

Donning a white t-shirt and a pair of black pants, Mescal seemed to be channelling his inner Connell with several fans noting that he was also wearing the now-famous neck chain. Credited with making it the must-have item of the season, it’s a title it shares only with a pair of O’Neills GAA shorts (which Mescal also made cool again).

Paint me like one of your French girls, eh Paul?
