Paul Mescal’s mam posts motherly advice for her son as his meteoric rise continues

James Fenton

Paul Mescal seems like a fairly down to earth fella and it’s easy to see why when you consider the kind of advice provided to him by his mother.

While 2020 is the year that the world became aware of Paul Mescal’s many talents, his mother Dearbhla will have known about them long before the rest of us. Since April, Mescal-watchers have slowly been mesmerised by the Kildare man’s range of skills, firstly from his portrayal of Connell Waldron in Normal People, before we found out that he’s a pretty decent singer as well during this duet with Dermot Kennedy. He’s also been known to post videos of himself and his sister Nell sharing a tune, if there wasn’t already enough talent in the family already.

This week Mescal showed us that he has some (albeit drunken) dance moves as well by starring in the video for the new Rolling Stones song Scarlet, which you can watch here. Teaming up with the iconic rockers is just another sign of how far Paul has come this year and he summed that up himself by tweeting the clip along with the words ‘Mum this is all a bit mad’.

You said it, pal. When things get a bit crazy in life though, we can always rely on our mothers to keep our feet on the ground and Paul’s mam Dearbhla did just that by replying: ‘Just a bit… But boy it’s the best kinda crazy… Enjoy the ride.’

Her comment drew plenty of praise from Twitter users on what a good job she did in bringing Paul up, with others pointing out how proud she must be for his continued success.

Mescal’s appearance in the new Rolling Stones video has been viewed over 300,000 times since it premiered on Thursday night and with the 24-year-old also currently starring in The Deceived, he’s a very busy man at present.

Whatever he does next, we know there’s one person who will be especially proud.
