Robbie Keane’s mam “forgot” to tell him he was related to a famous singer

Robbie Keane has been speaking about how his mother just plain forgot to tell him that he was related to one of the most famous singers of the 1980s.

We’ve all had that experience where our mams have forgotten to give us information just because they don’t think it’s that important. Well, in Robbie Keane’s case, his mother’s memory lapse meant he went years without knowing his cousin was Morrissey, the frontman of iconic 1980s group The Smiths.

Speaking on BT yesterday, Ireland’s record goalscorer told James Richardson how he was informed about the connection one day in Los Angeles by a friend of a friend. Surprised at the revelation, he rang his mam and she confirmed that her own mother and Morrissey’s mother were sisters. Robbie went on to quiz her about why she kept it secret for so long and you can hear her response in his anecdote below…

So, there you have it. While young Keano was honing his skills on the streets of Tallaght during the 1980s, his (second) cousin Morrissey was performing in arenas around the world.

Just days ago, Morrissey called on fans to pray for his mother Elizabeth, who is currently ill. In a post on his website, he says that she was born in Holles Street Hospital in Dublin, ‘in winter months’ and asks fans to ‘offer prayers of hope and prayers of intercession for the recovery of Elizabeth Anne Dwyer, who is my mother, who is in trouble, and who is the sole reason for all the good and motivational things in my life.’

Elizabeth and Morrisey’s father Peter emigrated from Dublin to Manchester a year before his birth.
