RTE and TG4 have a fine selection of movies tonight but which of the three should you watch?

James Fenton

It’s Bank Holiday Monday and that means there should be a decent choice of movies on TV tonight to help you wrap up your weekend in a relaxing fashion.

We’ve had a rattle through the TV guide and have found that there are a total of three movies being screened by Irish channels tonight during primetime hours. Alas, all three pretty much start around the same time so you’ll definitely need to hit the record button if you want to complete the hat trick.

Get your feet up, let your sunburn settle and take your pick from the following…

Casino Royale – RTE 2 9pm

Daniel Craig’s debut outing as 007 sees James Bond dispatched on the trail of Le Chiffre, an international criminal financing terrorist organisations around the world. It’s a stellar start to Craig’s Bond career with some white-knuckle action scenes. Well worth checking out if you’re yet to see it.

War of the Worlds – TG4 9.15pm

Tom Cruise plays a divorced dad who is balancing the task of reconnecting with his children and the slightly more pressing matter of saving the world from an alien attack. Stephen Spielberg directs this 2005 adaptation of the HG Wells novel. Entertaining fare for a Monday night with just the right amount of Hollywood cheese.

Murder on the Orient Express – RTE One 9.30pm

A 2017 version of the Agatha Christie mystery. The all-star cast features the likes of Kenneth Branagh (who also directs), Penelope Cruz, Johnny Depp, Judi Dench and Willem Dafoe. Bound to keep mystery fans occupied for the evening.
