Saoirse Ronan Was At A Popular Irish Tourist Spot When Her Golden Globe Nomination Was Announced

James Fenton

For most of us, getting nominated for a Golden Globe is something we can only dream about. We imagine if the day ever arrived, we’d be ready to shout it from the rooftops.

Not so, Saoirse Ronan. The Irish star learned yesterday that she had received the third Golden Globe nomination of her career for her performance in Lady Bird. So how did she find out? Was she waiting by the phone for news to come in? Refreshing Twitter every five seconds? Nah, she was out for a walk in Glendalough on a crisp December day.

The 23-year-old told People Magazine:

“I actually forgot about it because I was just on a different time zone and I was up and out of the house.

“I had a friend over and we went to this beautiful site called Glendalough, which is a monastic site and there’s a beautiful lake and mountains.

“My bag just started to vibrate nonstop and I was like ‘What’s going on?’ And then I saw a bunch of missed calls from my publicist and I was like, ‘Oh s—, they’re out today!’”

“It was actually quite nice cause it meant I wasn’t thinking about it too much. It was such a lovely, pleasant surprise when I heard”.

To be fair, Glendalough is feckin’ beautiful.

The whole of Ireland will be hoping Saoirse takes the trophy home after missing out for her roles in Atonement and Brooklyn in the past.

While Ronan’s performance in Lady Bird has received rave reviews, she faces a tough task as she was nominated for Best Actress In A Motion Picture (Musical Or Comedy) alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood namely Judi Dench (Victoria & Abdul), Helen Mirren (The Leisure Seeker), Margot Robbie (I, Tonya) and Emma Stone (Battle Of The Sexes).

Let’s just hope she’s not stuck at the Guinness Storehouse or kissing the Blarney Stone when the ceremony take place in Los Angeles on January 7.
