Sir David Attenborough won’t be returning to Instagram but he WILL send you a handwritten letter

Sarah Finnan

Breaking all kinds of records, Sir David Attenborough became the fastest Instagram user to amass one million followers on the platform – an accolade formerly held by Hollywood actress Jennifer Aniston.

Sir David Attenborough near enough broke the internet when he joined Instagram last year. Blessing all our timelines with his words of wisdom, the much-loved broadcaster had big plans to use the social media channel as a new way of communicating with the public.

Sounds like those plans were shortlived though as Sir David has since revealed that he will not, in fact, be returning to Instagram. Giving it his best shot, the famous presenter uploaded a total of 27 posts before calling it quits.

Speaking to BBC Radio One during the week, the world’s favourite environmentalist joked that he has “enough problems with the post”. Explaining why he joined the platform in the first place, he said:

“I was persuaded… to do a message about conservation. So, for a limited period of time, I did contribute to Instagram, but I’m off now. And I don’t intend to go back.”

Revealing that he receives a whopping 70 letters a day, the 94-year-old is making a return to more old school methods of communication. Write to him and he’ll even send you a handwritten response back – just include a stamped, self-addressed envelope and he’d be “delighted” to respond.

Zoom quizzes were fun for all of five minutes. Getting a handwritten letter from Sir David Attenborough though? Don’t think the novelty of that would ever wear off.
