Facebook has announced that ads will soon be displayed in its Messenger app after trials in Thailand and Australia.
In a bid to further monetise the service, which has 1.2 billion monthly users, advertisements will appear on the home screen of the app, à la the demonstration below.
A statement from Facebook reads:
“People already spend time on Messenger interacting and conducting commerce with businesses and brands they love, and now with Messenger ads, they have an opportunity to discover experiences directly on their home tab.”
Users who click on the ads will be taken directly to the website of the advertiser. A slow rollout of the ads will begin in the next few weeks.
