Telescopic Contact Lenses That Are Controlled By Winking

louisejohnston

This is fucking incredible – we’re getting closer and closer to achieving the real bionic man. Researchers in the Swiss tech university Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne have created a prototype for telescopic contact lenses that are controlled by winking.

Each contact contains a super-thin reflective telescope inside its 1.55-millimetre lens. Tiny mirrors in this bounce light around to create the magnifying effect, similar to that of looking through a pair of binoculars. The lens offers a 2.8-times zoom increase. When these contacts are paired with a special pair of glasses, the user can easily zoom in and out just by blinking. It’s still looking quite basic, but it’s a huge development in optics.
