The makers of Zig & Zag have a new animated comedy for adults on RTE this week

Rory Cashin

It tells the story of three flatmates in Rathmines trying to save Ireland.

Anyone who has enjoyed watching the likes of Bojack Horseman, Rick & Morty, Bob’s Burgers or Archer in recent years will attest to the fact that animated comedies aimed at adults are at quality high right now, and considering Ireland has some of the best animation studios in the world, it feels like now is the best time for us to join in the genre.

Fantasy Ireland is created and directed by Trevor Courtney of Igloo Animations, written by Ciaran Morrison and Mick O’ Hara (Zig and Zag, Podge and Rodge), and the voice talent includes Mary Kate Geraghty AKA MayKay (Fight Like Apes, Le Galaxie, Other Voices) and Pascal Scott (Grabbers, Intermission, The Young Offenders).

For anyone wondering what the plot of the show actually is, try to keep up because the explanation alone is a mad ride:

“Set in a fantastical version of contemporary Ireland, with a dollop of Irish mythology thrown into the mix. No topic is sacred – whether it’s politics, Irish history, myths and monsters, modern Ireland, the church or Aldi specials, they’ll be lampooned with a good dose of irony, satire and unadulterated craic.

“There are fierce strange happenings going on. Ireland is in grave peril, shrouded in a mist of malevolence. This is the time when we need heroes like Cu Chulainn, Fionn Mac Cumhaill and Daniel O’Connell to rise up once again. However, since everyone seems to have fecked off to Australia looking for work we’re left with Ciara, Tony and Jay – AKA The Shamz – three eejits who have been tasked with saving the Irish nation.”

The first episode of Fantasy Ireland will premiere on RTE Two this Thursday at 11.20pm, and you can check out the trailer for the show right here:
