The New Touran Is The Perfect Multi-Purpose Car

louisejohnston

Usually when I see MPV written down I run a mile. I suppose it stems from a long-standing fear of ever residing to using a vehicle AKA a “Mom-Mobile”, yes that stereo-typical family with a Mom, a Dad and a bunch of sport-loving kids that need to be shipped around between school and soccer practice. The common misconception is that these MPV’s are fugly cars that usually mean that a woman has given up her sexiness to comfortably fit a big family in the back seats. Well, I take it all back. MPV’s can look slick and sleek without compromising the necessities that larger families want from a road car.

Introducing the new Touran, Volkwagen’s contribution to family cars. Its not overly-bulky or ugly looking. In fact, it just looks like a larger Golf, which are hugely popular cars in Ireland because of their sharp, sporty design. And it appears that this car surpasses the norms for this class of car with its engine being up to 19% more economical for starters. This compact MPV has gone through a complete redesign, which has in-turn reduced the overall weight of the car and made better use of the space. The reduction in weight obviously means fuel consumption is reduced too. And the new-look bodywork means its far more aerodynamic.

The Touran is a big fella – allowing up to 7 passengers and is equipped with a 7 speed gearbox. What’s different about this MPV to previous ones is that its been completely developed based on the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB). The MQB strategy was introduced to Volkswagen in early 2012 and represents a turning point in the design and production of future cars with transverse-mounted engines. The Modular Transverse Matrix standardises many vehicle component parameters – across brands and vehicle classes. At the same time, it offers access to new technologies. Making the Touran a much safer, better equipped MPV.

It has a further 48 Litres of luggage space, making it the biggest luggage compartment in its class (ideal for travelling). They’ve also introduced a new Pure Air Climatronic system making it perfect for everyday use, no matter where you are. Other tech features include MirrorLinkâ„¢, CarPlay (Apple) and Android Auto (Google) and a new spectrum of infotainment systems for first time.
