The nine best movies on TV this cold Friday night

James Fenton

The cold weather is set to last into the weekend so there’s no better way to spend your Friday than snuggled up with some movies on TV.

Tonight’s line-up of movies on TV provides plenty of jumpy scares, a dollop of sci-fi and, of course, some romance for the weekend that’s in it.

Here’s a selection of the best movies on TV this evening…

Jaws 2 – ITV 4 – 9pm

“It’s a different film, Ted, it’s a very different film! It’s a different shark!”

The Martian – Film4 – 9pm

Matt Damon ventures a little bit further than Dalkey in this 2015 Oscar-nominated sci-fi.

Forsaken – TG4 – 9.20pm

A Canadian Western starring father and son duo Donald and Kiefer Sutherland.

The Zookeeper’s Wife – RTÉ 2 – 9.30pm

A 2017 war drama starring Jessica Chastain.

Law Abiding Citizen – Virgin Media One – 9.30pm

A 2009 action thriller with Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler.

Scream 3 – MTV – 10pm

The original conclusion of the Scream trilogy, until Scream 4 was released 11 years afterwards. The franchise was starting to get a little tired but there are still scares, slasher clichés and laughs aplenty.

Lady MacBeth – BBC 2 – 11.20pm

Florence Pugh stars in this British drama based on the novella Lady MacBeth of the Mtsensk District.

The Graduate – RTÉ One – 11.25pm

The timeless 1967 film starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft.

The Notebook – BBC 1 – 12.05am

Well, it is Valentines weekend.
