These are the eight best movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

A very impressive set of movies on TV tonight, if we do say so ourselves.

Some days, when we put these lists together, we’re impressed by the sheer amount of different movies on offer, and how some of them we don’t actually get to see very often.

Thankfully, this is one of those days!

Central Intelligence – FilmFour – 6.50pm

The Rock and Kevin Hart star in this action-comedy about a CIA agent recruiting his friend from back in high school to help crack an undercover case.

The Lost City of Z – BBC Four – 9pm

Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, and Tom Holland star in this true story of an explorer who believes he has found evidence of a previously-undiscovered tribe deep in the Amazon jungle.

Bridget Jones’ Diary – Comedy Central – 9pm

Rene Zellweger stars as the titular Bridget, looking for love in all the wrong places, including her somewhat untrustworthy boss (Hugh Grant), while overlooking a much better option (Colin Firth).

Planet of the Apes – ITV4 – 9pm

Tim Burton’s big budget take on the classic sci-fi tale casts Mark Wahlberg as the astronaut who crash lands on a planet run by apes, and other humans are seen as a lesser species.

Hunter Killer – FilmFour – 9pm

Gerard Butler is out to save the world again, this time as the captain of a nuclear submarine, playing a game of cat and mouse with a group of Russian subs.

Scream 2 – MTV – 10pm

The stab-happy sequel sees the survivors of the original forced into another round of scares with the ghostfaced killer.

About A Boy – Comedy Central – 11pm

Hugh Grant again, once again playing a somewhat-not-super-nice-guy, but here he finds his heart is warmed by a charming-if-a-bit-odd young boy who decides to befriend him.

Payback – ITV4 – 11.25pm

Mel Gibson is a criminal who has been double-crossed and left for dead by his girlfriend and his best friend, but once he’s fixed himself up, he goes out looking for violent revenge.
