It’s Saturday, the weather isn’t great and we’re not really supposed to be going anywhere. Definitely a night for kicking back with a movie.
Thankfully, there are quite a few movies on TV tonight, ranging from war epics, to heartwarming Irish flicks to some of the best ironic watches out there. Take your pick from the following and set the recorder for the rest.
2012 – Comedy Central 8pm
A fairly ridiculous but rather enjoyable 2009 disaster movie about the imminent end of the world in 2012. In reality, the apocalyptic scenario never came to pass, of course, but 2020 hasn’t been far off in terms of being a massive disaster.
Edward Scissorhands – E4 – 6.55pm
A cuddly classic to kick off your night at home, this movie is now 30 years old, somehow.
Saving Private Ryan – Sky One – 9pm
The 1998 war epic won Stephen Spielberg his second Best Director Oscar and stars Tom Hanks and Dalkey’s very own Matt Damon.
12 Years a Slave – Channel 4 – 9pm
The 2014 Best Picture winner is far from comfortable viewing but is a fairly essential watch which outlines the realities of the American slave trade in the 1800s.
The Meg – RTE One – 9.20pm
A movie about a 75-foot shark which stars Jason Statham and Rainn Wilson from The Office? Yes please.
Bridge of Spies – RTE 2 – 9.20pm
Hanks and Spielberg team up again in this historical drama set during the Cold War.
Inside I’m Dancing – TG4 – 9.50pm
An Irish comedy-drama in which Scotsman James McAvoy displays a very impressive Dublin accent in his role as the rebellious Rory O’Shea who suffers with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
The Patriot – RTE 2 – 9.50pm
Mel Gibson and the late Heath Ledger star in this 2000 historical fiction war film.
