These are the five best movies on TV this evening

Rory Cashin

Some movie recommendations for your cold and wet Thursday evening.

Have you seen the weather? Outside is not an option tonight.

Since we’re just a few days out from Halloween, if you’re looking for a classic scary movie, then we recommend you check out one of these.

But if you’re just looking for what is already on the TV tonight, then here are your best options:

The Huntsman: Winter’s War – FilmFour – 7.50pm

Chris Hemsworth, Emily Blunt, Charlize Theron, and Jessica Chastain star in this sorta-sequel to the gritty Snow White reboot with Kirsten Stewart, but this leans harder into the magical battles, with a plot that resembles a grown-up and angry version of Frozen. Don’t overthink it and just enjoy looking at all of the pretty people.

A Star Is Born – BBC Four – 9pm

Not the Lady Gaga/Bradley Cooper remake, but the 1954 version with Judy Garland and James Mason version. The plot is essentially the same; a musician with a drinking problem discovers a new talent, and is forced to watch her popularity soar while his own withers away.

Sicario – FilmFour – 10pm

Emily Blunt is recruited into a task force that battles drug cartels on the US/Mexico border, but with a shady government operative (Josh Brolin) and a killer-for-hire (Benicio Del Toro) supposed to represent “the good guys”, she soon figures she doesn’t have anyone she can trust on this mission.

Kick-Ass – Comedy Central – 10pm

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nic Cage, Chloe Grace Moretz, Mark Strong and McLovin’ himself star in this gritty, violent story of what would happen if people tried to be costumed superheroes in the real world.

The Descent – FilmFour – 2.35am

After the sudden death of her husband and young child, a woman tries to distract herself with a cave-diving trip with her best friends. However, after a cave-in, they soon discover they’re not alone down there…
