These are the five best movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

Tom Hardy, Robert Downey Jr., and Gerard Butler all feature in the best movies on TV tonight.

The really quite good thriller Rebecca has been added to Netflix today, but if you’re looking to maybe save that for the weekend, these are your best choices for movies on TV this evening:

Gods of Egypt – FilmFour – 6.35pm

Just to be clear, this epic action sc-fi movie isn’t good. But it is enjoyable, in a “Gerard Butler is playing a nine-foot-tall Greek God but has decided to keep his Scottish accent” kind of way.

Sherlock Holmes – TCM – 9pm

Robert Downey Jnr. and Jude Law have impeccable chemistry as Holmes and Watson in this action-packed take on the world’s greatest detective.

Belle – FilmFour – 9pm

A period romance telling the story of the mixed-race daughter, Dido Elizabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), of Royal Navy Captain Sir John Lindsay (Matthew Goode) is raised by aristocratic Great-uncle Lord William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) in eighteenth century England.

Carlito’s Way – ITV4 – 10.30pm

Al Pacino stars as a former convict who is trying to stay away from a life of crime, but his old New York friends (including Sean Penn, Viggo Mortensen, and John Leguizamo) slowly begin to drag him back down.

Locke – Channel 4 – 2.30am

Tom Hardy in a car, in a jumper, with a thick Welsh accent. That is it, that is the movie. Tom driving somewhere late at night, and a series of important phone calls. Somehow, it is still the best movie on tonight.
