The weekend is upon us, and these are the best movies to enjoy on your Friday night!
Friday!
Fri-day!
Gotta watch movies on Fri-Day!
Footloose – FilmFour – 6.40pm
Kevin Bacon is the cool teenager who clashes with the elders of a small town run by a very religious man who has banned dancing and rock’n’roll, so Bacon decides to fight back by… dancing.
Planet of the Apes – ITV4 – 9pm
The Mark Wahlberg-starring remake isn’t as good as the originals, or the Andy Serkis-starring, more-recent remakes, but it is still entirely watchable, thanks to some great over-acting by Tim Roth in full-on villainy mode.
Death Wish – Virgin Media One – 9.30pm
Sometimes, we make it our job not only to tell you what movies to watch, but also which movies to avoid. We know this is the Best Movies on TV tonight list, but we had to add this one just to tell you to avoid it, because it is TERRIBLE. Bruce Willis sleepwalks his way through this violent remake, and it truly isn’t worth your time.
Loving – RTE Two – 9.35pm
Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton star in this powerful drama set in 1950s Virginia, as an interracial couple who are targeted by local authorities, leading to a momentous and historic legal battle.
Nightcrawler – BBC Two – 11.20pm
Jake Gyllenhaal really should’ve been nominated for Best Actor for his portrayal of an ambulance-chasing reporter who is willing to go further than is legally allowed in order to get his stories on the nightly news.
The China Syndrome – RTE One – 11.25pm
Jane Fonda and Jack Nicholson star in this classic thriller about a pair of reporters who discover a nuclear power plant is hiding a massively dangerous fault in their systems.
Shakespeare In Love – BBC One – 12.05am
The inexplicably popular-with-the-Oscars period-rom-com-dram is perfectly decent, but hardly an absolute classic. Still, the cute blossoming romance between Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes) and his muse (Gwyneth Paltrow) is a very easy watch.
