Yep, you read that correctly. Twelve. 12. One followed by a two. Spoiled for movies on TV tonight, so we are.
Your Saturday night viewing menu is STACKED.
Let us begin…
Casino Royale – RTE Two – 7.15pm
Daniel Craig’s first outing as 007 is arguably his best one (either this or Skyfall, depending on who you ask), and it remains one of the best Bond movies overall, thanks to a great villain, great Bond Girl, and some great action (and an okay Bond song).
Happy Gilmore – Comedy Central – 8pm
Adam Sandler landed in our lives as an angry man-child (and kind of continued as an angry man-child ever since), and it works fantastically well here as he plays a failed hockey player who finds a natural affinity with golf.
Ghost – Virgin Media Three – 9pm
One of the saddest and most-romantic movies ever made, with Patrick Swayze murdered in cold blood, but hanging around as a ghost to keep his girlfriend Demi Moore safe, with the help of a medium, a role that landed Whoopi Goldberg an Oscar.
The Fugitive – TCM – 9pm
Another supporting character taking home an Oscar, this time it is Tommy Lee Jones as a US Marshall trying to track down Harrison Ford, an innocent man accused of murdering his wife.
Forrest Gump – Channel 4 – 9.20pm
And ANOTHER Oscar winner, with Tom Hanks taking home Best Actor for his portrayal of a man who finds himself in the middle of the action during almost every major event in US history of a number of decades.
John Wick – Sky One – 9.20pm
No Oscars for Keanu Reeves for this (which is a shame, really), as a hitman who comes out of retirement when someone breaks into his home and steals his car and kills his new puppy. Which is the most understandable reason for his actions, to be fair.
Brooklyn – RTE One – 10.35pm
Saoirse Ronan almost won an Oscar for this one (it is one of her four nominations to date), as a young woman who is torn between her new life in America, and her family and friends back in Ireland.
Safe House – ITV4 – 10.45pm
Ryan Reynolds plays a bored CIA agent, taking care of an empty safe house in South Africa, when one of the world’s most wanted criminals (Denzel Washington) arrives, and all hell breaks loose.
Happy Death Day – FilmFour – 10.55pm
A college girl is violently murdered by a masked killer, but wakes up back in her bed, the day resetting, only to wind up back in the killer’s path. A great horror-comedy that is basically a mix of Scream and Groundhog Day.
Carrie – Channel 4 – 12.10am
A teenage girl with an intensely religious mother discovers she has some supernatural abilities, which doesn’t bode well for her school bullies. One of the best Stephen King adaptations of all time, and a properly iconic horror.
Notes on a Scandal – BBC One – 12.25am
Judi Dench plays a school teacher with an abrasive personality, who becomes obsessed with a new colleague (Cate Blanchett), only for her to decide to destroy her life when she discovers the new teacher is having an affair with one of her students.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping – FilmFour – 12.45am
A massively overlooked mockumentary, with Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg playing a sort-of-version of Justin Bieber, tracking his rise to and fall from fame.
