James Fenton

In recent weeks, RTÉ has been reminiscing on some of the most memorable days in our nation’s history with ‘Ireland’s Greatest Sporting Moment’.

The interactive show, hosted by Des Cahill and Evanne Ní Chuilinn, has sparked plenty of debate on Thursday evenings and last night was perhaps the closest vote of the lot as audiences at home decided on the best Irish sporting moments of the 21st century.

Pádraig Harrington’s 2007 Open triumph beat off competition from the Ireland Rugby team as well as Olympic medalists Katie Taylor and Sonia O’Sullivan and tension was high in studio before the golfer’s victory was declared.

One group of lads in the audience felt it was the perfect time to whip out a classic ice-breaker which they had clearly rehearsed beforehand.

The final of ‘Ireland’s Greatest Sporting Moment’ takes place next week.
