WATCH: This Dark Comedy About The Mayo GAA Curse Looks Outstanding

James Fenton

The so-called curse on the Mayo footballers is by now one of the most well-known legends in Ireland.

It’s said to have originated when a parish priest in Foxford took umbrage with the 1951 All-Ireland winning team when they failed to pay their respects while passing a funeral in the town during their celebrations.

The holy man supposedly placed a curse on the team, and the county, which ensured they would not win another All-Ireland until all members of the 1951 squad had passed away.

As it turned out, that was the last championship the county would win and only two members of the team remain alive today namely Paddy Prendergast and Padraig Carney.

Now, the story has been documented in the form of a dark comedy called An Mhallacht (The Curse). The film, which won the ‘Grand Prix’ award at the Oddalenia Dublin Film Festival has been chosen for a screening at next month’s Galway Film Fleadh.

It features a doctor who is attending the last living player on the 1951 team and details of future screenings can be found in the Facebook post below.

We can’t wait to check it out and to whet your appetite, we’ve got the trailer below.
