Tonight’s Hour-Long RTÉ Documentary Will Honour An Irish Sporting And TV Icon

James Fenton

To younger generations, John Giles is known solely for his stellar career as a football pundit with RTÉ Sport, a role which he left last year after a 30-year spell.

However, to older Irish folk, Giles was also a hell of a baller himself, arguably one of Ireland’s greatest ever.

The Dubliner, who once enjoyed a spell as manager of the national team, is the subject of an RTÉ documentary this evening, aptly-titled ‘Giles’.

The programme will take a look at John’s upbringing in Dublin, where teachers derided him for playing the ‘British game’, to his days at Manchester United right through to becoming a legend of English football with Leeds United.

It looks like a great Monday evening’s viewing and the trailer can be seen below. ‘Giles’ airs tonight on RTÉ 1 at 9.35pm.
