The documentary, Whistleblower: The Maurice McCabe Story aired on RTÉ last night and the online reaction was huge.

In the programme, McCabe recalled how he first raised concerns of misconduct when he was sergeant of Baileborough Garda Station.

It's the first time that Maurice and Lorraine McCabe have told their side of the story on TV.

In 2014, he was asked to appear before a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to give evidence about the cancellation of penalty points by senior gardaí.

After that appearance, former Garda Commissioner, Martin Callinan launched a "campaign of calumny" on McCabe and his family.

It was later described as a "frontal attack."

Callinan began to feed false information to TD John McGuinness, PAC chairman, saying McCabe could not be trusted.

He also said McCabe sexually abused children, including family members.

This was just the beginning of a nightmare that lasted for years for the McCabe family.

Unsurprisingly, reaction to the documentary was extremely strong with many praising McCabe and his family.

Part two of Whistleblower: The Maurice McCabe Story will air tonight on RTÉ One at 9:35pm.
