One Of The All-Time Great Irish Crime Movies Is On RTÉ Tonight

James Fenton

Irish cinema has given us some absolute gems over the years and it’s always a bonus when one of them is shown on the telly.

With that in mind, RTÉ is dusting off a classic tonight in the shape of 1998’s The General, a fictionalised biopic of infamous Dublin crime boss Martin Cahill. The movie follows Cahill from his childhood in the city through to his rise into the world of crime, where he comes to the attention of the IRA and the UVF.

Directed by John Boorman and starring Brendan Glesson as Cahill, the movie won awards for Best Director at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival and Best Feature Film at the Irish Film And Television Awards in 1999.

It’s definitely one to tick off the list if you haven’t seen it and it airs on RTÉ 2 at 9.30pm tonight. Check out the trailer below for a taster.
