TV Pick – 2017 Oscar-Winning Drama Makes Its Irish TV Debut Tonight

James Fenton

That was a tough four-day week, right?

There’s no doubt you’ll be feeling pretty wiped tonight so the only solution is to curl up on the sofa with a decent flick. Thankfully, RTÉ has you covered.

The station will be showing the Irish TV premiere of Manchester By The Sea, a 2016 drama starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams. You might remember the movie creating a decent amount of Oscar buzz a couple of years back and sure enough it took home two awards on the night – Best Actor for Affleck as well as Best Original Screenplay for Kenneth Lonergan.

The film tells the story of Lee Chandler (Affleck) who is left as the sole guardian of his nephew Patrick after the death of Patrick’s father Joe.

The events lead to Lee returning to his childhood home of Manchester-by-the-Sea in Massachusetts where he is forced to face the past he shared with ex-wife Randi (Williams).

The movie received largely positive reviews, appearing on many end-of-year ‘best of’ lists as well as gaining ‘universal acclaim’ on Metacritic. On the central theme of grief, critic Stephen Mears said that the film is ‘a study of grief and reticence that finds droll humor in those very sources’

If you missed it in the cinema, tonight is the perfect opportunity to rectify that.

Manchester By The Sea starts at 9.40pm tonight on RTÉ 2 and the trailer can be viewed below.
