Where were you when U2 played to a swarming Slane Castle crowd on a balmy September evening in 2001?
Well most of us were watching Jason McAteer score an unforgettable goal against the Dutch at Lansdowne Road but for 80,000 U2 fans there’s another reason to hold September 1 2001 fondly in their hearts. Whether you were one of them or not, you can relive it all on the band’s official YouTube for 48 hours only starting on St. Patrick’s Day.
It’s all part of U2: The Virtual Road, a series of the Irish group’s most famous gigs which will be broadcast for the first time around exclusively on YouTube. Not only that but the shows will feature opening performances from Dermot Kennedy, Fontaines D.C., Carla Morrison and Feu! Chatterton, most of whom were only youngsters when Bono et al performed at Slane on that famous 2001 night.
Other gigs that are included in The Virtual Road series are Live at Red Rocks in Denver 1983 (available from March 25), Popmart in Mexico City 1997 (from April 1) and iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE: Live in Paris 2015 (from April 10).
All shows will be available to watch for 48 hours only and in a statement about the series, U2 said: “Every show is memorable for us but these four particularly so… It’s exciting to be on the road again… Embracing all the wonder of the virtual road… And especially exciting to be joined by such a brilliant line-up of fellow travellers in Dermot Kennedy, Fontaines D.C., Carla Morrison and Feu! Chatterton.”
What better way to spend St. Patrick’s Day then a good dose of nostalgia from Slane Castle 2001? You can find the link to U2’s official YouTube channel here.
