James Fenton

When you’re sipping your hot cup of tea on your comfy sofa tonight, spare a thought for the participants on the new RTÉ series which should be the focus of your attention.

Special Forces – Ultimate Hell Week sees Irish civilians being put through a gruelling Special Forces selection course designed by members of the Army Ranger Wing. The 24 super-fit recruits are put through their paces at a military base deep in the Wicklow Mountains for a regime that will test them to their mental and physical limits.

Viewers will gain an insight into the ARW’s highly secretive selection process, which has a failure rate of upwards of 90%, indicating just how tough it is.

The first episode of Special Forces – Ultimate Hell Week will air on RTÉ 2 tonight at 9.30pm.
