This Short Film About A Belfast Girl Coming Out Is The Most Important Thing You’ll Watch Today

James Fenton

Not many short films can lay claim to directly affecting people’s lives but we reckon this is one of them.

Two years ago, Belfast journalist Lyra McKee gained a lot of attention for a blog post she wrote in the form of a letter to her 14-year-old self.

The story has now been made into a thought-provoking short film directed by Brian Mulholland. Starring young actress Jazzmin McClure, Letter To My 14 Year Old Self  serves as a monologue from adult Lyra directed at a fearful and confused younger version of herself who is dreading coming out as gay to her family and friends.

Since appearing online a couple of days ago, the film has received rave reviews with some calling for it to be shown in secondary schools around the country.

We reckon the film will reach out to countless young people who face the same journey as Lyra did all those years ago. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
