WATCH: Emotional Wes Hoolahan Goes Into Full Irish Mode During Farewell Speech

James Fenton

The Church Of Wes has long been established here in Ireland and it appears there are plenty of worshippers over in East Anglia too.

Wes Hoolahan dazzled Irish footballs fans throughout his international career before announcing his retirement from wearing the green jersey back in February. The decision led to plenty of tributes to the man known as Wessi on this side of the Irish Sea as the Green Army came to terms with the news that we would never see unforgettable moments like this again:

While Irish supporters have had a few months to digest this news, fans of Hoolahan’s club are now also coming to terms with the fact that Wes will never line out for them ever again either. The midfielder has spent ten years at the Carrow Road club before announcing last week that he would be leaving in the summer.

This led to an emotional weekend in Norfolk with Canaries fans and players paying some wonderful tributes to Wes ahead of their match at home to Leeds United on Saturday.

Fittingly, Hoolahan scored the equalising goal in a 2-1 win for the home side and now a video has emerged of it all getting a bit too much for the normally guarded star at a post-game reception.

Appearing alongside Norwich majority shareholder Delia Smith, Wes struggles to get his words out before doing what any true Irishman would do in that situation and requesting a pint of Guinness. He even managed to throw in an expletive between the tears, describing his soon-to-be former teammates as “f*cking brilliant”

Check out the video below, courtesy of BBC Radio Norfolk presenter Rob Butler:

We’ve just got something in our eye, lads. It’s great to see one of our own being so clearly revered across the water and with Wes appearing over 300 times for Norwich, the plaudits are certainly well-deserved. Given the level of adulation the Dubliner so clearly receives, it’s no wonder people make ridiculous/hilarious requests like this one from time to time.
