Viewers Can Vote For Ireland’s Greatest Sporting Moment In New RTÉ Series Starting Tonight

James Fenton

Can you remember where you were when Katie Taylor won gold in 2012? When Ronan O’Gara secured the Grand Slam in 2009? When Ray Houghton stuck the ball in the English net in 1988? Okay, maybe you weren’t alive for the last one but some of us were.

A new series starting on RTÉ tonight will debate which Irish sporting moment can truly be defined as our greatest. Each week, a panel of contributors will discuss which monumental events warrant a place at the top of the tree.

Only moments from Ireland’s first TV sport broadcast in 1962 up to 2012 are eligible for consideration and tonight sees Eamon Dunphy, Joe Brolly, Sonia O’Sullivan discuss five glorious moments from the 1980s.

Are you able to see past Packie Bonner’s save at Italia ’90 or are you more of a Michael Carruth person? One thing’s for sure, it should be a great series those who are into sport or just plain old nostalgia.

‘Ireland’s Greatest Sporting Moment’ starts tonight at 9.30pm on RTÉ 2.
