TWEETS: Irish People Are Torn About Who To Support In Tonight's World Cup Semi-Final
We'll never let go...
Irish people aren't usually known for begrudgery except of course when it comes to the World Cup.
Nine years ago, France's Thierry Henry made global headlines for being a BIG CHEATIN' FECKER, sorry, for a controversial handball which led to Ireland's failure to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
Nearly a decade on and while most of the country have put the incident behind them as best they can, there are still a few who can never forgive. Those people find themselves in an odd situation tonight as France take on Belgium in the World Cup semi-final.
While supporting France would mean cheering for the nation that robbed us of our dreams, the figure of Thierry Henry himself on the Belgium bench means that fans don't know which side to lean towards. You see, Henry is assistant manager to Belgium coach Roberto Martinez, meaning he'll be going up against the country of his birth for a place in Sunday's final.
At least we can take solace in the fact that Thierry will probably shed a tear or two no matter what the result by the end of the evening.
Don't want France to win because of Henry's bastard handball. Don't want Belgium to win for the same reason.— Gary Farrell ☭️ (@Trigger_1978) July 10, 2018
It's an easy choice tonight. Go Belgium! Thierry Henry is involved in both sides, so Irish grudges are unavoidable, but Belgium already beat England this tournament, so they're our best hope to shut the English fans up. #WorldCup #thierryhenryisacheatingbastard— Brian Lelas (@brianlelas) July 10, 2018
Can't forget Thierry Henry handball. Can both lose? #RussiaWorldCup2018— Billy Timmins (@Billy_Timmins) July 10, 2018
Thierry Henry is an interesting subplot tomorrow. I still find it hard to let it go, 9 years later.— John Duggan (@JohnDugganSport) July 9, 2018
If Belgium win tonight then Thierry Henry will be as popular in France as he is in Ireland pic.twitter.com/yT03uhG4mO— Diarmuid (@diarmuidg) July 10, 2018
