Yikes – Have You Been Charging Your Phone Wrong All This Time?

Sarah

How many times have you been on a night out and had your phone – suddenly and cruelly – go dead. We’ve lost count. Sure, we should bring portable chargers with us.

But FFS, can we not just have a phone with a half decent battery?

Unfortunately, it looks like we’ve only ourselves to blame. As spotted by Business Insider, a clever Battery University website has revealed the right and wrong way to charge your phone and sure look. We’re dopes.

Here’s what to do… And what not to do.

Charge it little and often

“Partial charges cause no harm,” says Battery University. In fact, it’s way better for the battery to be charged by 10-15% each time at several points during the day.

Don’t let your phone go dead before charging it

Shit. This is where we reckon a lot of people go wrong.

Apparently letting your phone go down to a deep-discharge (when there’s barely any battery left) wrecks the battery over time.

The golden charge is between 65% and 75%

According to Battery University, the lithium-ion battery in your smartphone will last longest if you keep it 65% to 75% charged at all time. We’ll try our best.

The second best charge range is between 45% and 75% but being realistic, just try keep your phone’s charge level between 25% and 75%.

And finally… NEVER full charge your phone

This is the battery killer, folk. Battery University says that lithium-ion batteries do “not need to be fully charged, nor is it desirable to do so.”

“In fact, it is better not to fully charge,” it says, “because a high voltage stresses the battery” and kills it in the long run.

Which means no charging that phone overnight…
